| PG Diploma/MA Education in Clinical Settings |
The KSS Deanery runs, through its partnership with the University of Brighton, a Postgraduate Certificate programme which has, as its specialist focus, teaching in clinical settings.
High quality teaching is directly proportional to high quality patient care. In this regard, medical educators directly add value to the quality of the health service; both in an immediate sense and over the longer term.
The work of medical educators is immensely challenging, however, because it takes place in clinical settings where patient safety has to be a priority.
Who enrols for this course?
Course participants are usually consultants and other senior health professionals such as nurse educators who already have a role teaching postgraduate doctors within clinical settings and who wish to develop this role.
What is the nature of the course?
The course is rooted in everyday practice and the development of practical teaching in clinical settings. The course team has a strong commitment to using participants' everyday practice as a major resource for learning.
It should, therefore, have an influence on your career. At the same time the course is not concerned with just ‘tips for teachers’ but tackles the theory behind much of contemporary educational practice.
Quotes
"It has given me more insight than I had ever dreamed it would.""I have always enjoyed teaching. This course has given me…the credibility within the Trust to lead change – induction, curriculum, teaching programmes, etc.""It was good to get back into thinking - throwing ideas around, and being challenged.""I am now considering higher educational roles (Clinical Tutor or Director of Medical Education) and it is good to know what I am talking about!"Course prerequisites
It is expected that all applicants will have both experience and interest in developing their teaching.
Applicants to the PG Certificate who are consultants within the KSS Deanery, will ordinarily demonstrate evidence of this interest through completion of the Part 1 of the Qualified Educational Supervisor Programme (QESP). Exceptions to this will be considered on a case by case basis.
Course progression
This course normally takes one year part-time to complete and leads on to the PG Diploma/MA Clinical Education, which would take a further 2 years of part-time study.
What is the time commitment for the course?
Each module involves 5 study days per term and there are 3 terms per year. The study days will be held at the Deanery in London starting at 9.30 and finishing at 15.30.
An important part of the course is reflection on your practice. This will involve some reflection time, note taking and preparing to contribute to sessions (intersessional tasks) on top of your normal workload.
Most importantly you will be expected to read around medical education issues in preparation for assignments and teaching sessions. It is difficult to quantify this but, at postgraduate level, you should expect to spend more time reading around the subject than at teaching sessions.
