Introduction
We welcome your interest in this PG Certificate Teaching in Clinical Settings. We hope that this booklet provide you with useful information about the course and the application process. If you have any questions that are not answered in this booklet, please do get in touch with the course administrator or course leader (email and telephone contacts listed on page 5-6) High quality teaching is directly proportional to high quality patient care. In this regard, medical educators directly add value to the quality of the Health service; both in an immediate sense and over the longer term. The work of teaching is immensely challenging, however, not least because it takes place in clinical settings where patient safety has to be a priority. The PG Cert. Teaching in Clinical Settings is designed to meet the professional development needs of all experienced health care professionals who have a teaching role in clinical settings in postgraduate medical education. It is structured for parttime study in the context of relevant practice within the NHS, and normally takes one year to complete. It is a discrete course, although it is likely that once successfully completed, candidates will want to move onto a second year, working towards the PG Diploma in Clinical Education, and a third MA year, to complete the MA in Clinical Education. The course will provide you with the tools to reflect on your own teaching practice, and to become agents of change in developing educational practice in clinical settings. The course is part of the postgraduate provision of the Brighton & Sussex Medical School (BSMS) and is based in central London, at KSS Deanery.
What is the time commitment for the course?
As you will see below, each module involves 5 study days at the Deanery in London starting at 9.30 and finishing at 3.30. BSMS expects you to attend these sessions unless you are unexpectedly prevented by illness, etc. An important part of the course is reflection on your practice. This will involve some reflection time, note taking and preparing to contribute to sessions (intersessional tasks) on top of your normal workload. Most importantly you will be expected to read around medical education theory in preparation for assignments and teaching sessions. It is difficult to quantify this but at postgraduate level you should expect to spend more time reading around the subject than at teaching sessions.
Programme aims
The primary aim of this programme is to provide support for the development of understandings of teaching in clinical settings. As course participants you will be interacting with other consultants and senior staff who have a role as educators of postgraduate doctors within clinical settings, and who also wish to develop this role.
1
The course aims to provide opportunities for you:  to develop your ability to articulate and critically reflect upon your personal/professional values in relation to your own professional practice in healthcare and education;  to explore the relationship between your espoused values and your actual practice;  to unearth the tacit knowledge that underpins your practice;  to develop your conceptual understanding of the nature of professional practice and how it can be appraised, analysed and interpreted;  to develop your appreciation of the content and role of educational literature and published research in supporting and developing your professional practice.
Level of the course
The academic standard for the PG Cert course is postgraduate (M) level and the Postgraduate Certificate will be awarded on successful completion of 60 credits across three modules, as indicated on page 4. It is important to note that, as a postgraduate course, this is much more than a ‘teacher training programme’ as indicated in the aims above. Students without a first degree will be considered on a case by case basis.
Entry requirements
Applicants will usually hold a first degree. Non-graduate entry is available to those with substantial relevant background or experience, who can satisfactorily demonstrate their ability to participate in and profit from study at Master’s level. All prospective students should provide evidence of recent study at a suitable level. It is expected that all applicants will have both experience and interest in developing their teaching. Applicants to the PG Certificate who are consultants within the KSS Deanery, will ordinarily demonstrate evidence of this interest through completion of the Part 1 of the Qualified Educational Supervisor Programme (QESP). Exceptions to this will be considered on a case by case basis.
Selection
The selection process will be based on an online written application (which should include evidence from your current practice) and attendance at an interview, in which you will be asked to discuss:  previous clinical teaching and leadership experience and motivation for taking the course;  how you will use your time, on a weekly basis, to fulfill course module requirements;  access to computing and learning resources;  your readiness to apply theory to your current practice. Interviews will be held on a rolling basis throughout the year at KSS Deanery, 7 Bermondsey Street, London SE1 2DD.
2
In discussion with the course leader, it may be recommended that, prior to starting the course, certain applicants take the Advanced Learning Studies module. This course is run by the University of Brighton and designed to prepare students for M level learning.
Guidelines on application process
To apply for the course, which begins in January 2011, applicants should complete an online form, found at the Brighton & Sussex Medical School website: http://courses.brighton.ac.uk/course.php?cnum=570 The closing date for applications will be 30th September, 2010 The following notes will help you to complete the online application: Work experience: Please list only your current post. In the other lines in this section list your educational responsibilities and regular teaching contexts. Your personal statement: Outline the reasons why you wish to enrol on the course and the way in which you hope it might benefit the development of your teaching. Explain the contribution you intend to make to educational development within your Trust. Then, try to think of an incident from your own practice as an educator (formal groups / small group seminar / one-to-one teaching) which you regarded as in some way problematic. Explain why you regard this as problematic and worthy of further exploration. Your whole personal statement should not exceed 1000 words.
Computer access
Access to a computer and to the world-wide web is a pre-requisite. Applicants should have a reliable broadband e-mail and internet connection and be familiar with using information technology as both a research tool and a method of communication.
EEO
All applications will be subject to the University Equal Opportunities Policy. Students for whom English is not a first language must demonstrate an acceptable standard of comprehension and written communication in the English Language. An IELTS score of 7.0 is normally required. PLAB is also acceptable.

Overview of course structure
In the following section we set out the structure of the PG Certificate Teaching in Clinical Settings. We also set out the structure of the PG Diploma and MA in Clinical Education for those applicants who are interested in continuing to these courses, after completion of the PG Cert Teaching in Clinical Settings.
PG Certificate Teaching in Clinical Settings
The PG Cert course consists of 3 x 20 credit modules, all of which are mandatory. The three modules have been designed to be taken in the order. Each module has 5 teaching dates, which are listed in the table below. Extending beyond this period of study is possible only in exceptional circumstances. As well as the teachings days, students will complete intersessional tasks (e.g. reading specified texts, conducting research tasks, and writing reflections) and a final assignment for each module.
