Advice and support services

The Education Department provides advice across the whole range of issues that are dealt with by the Deanery. These include educational issues in hospital medicine, General Practice and Dentistry, as well as cross-Deanery issues such as Dignity at Work.

Increasingly, as the Deanery’s partnership with the Strategic Health Authorities matures, we are involved in advising on cross-professional issues and initiatives for the region. In particular, we offer advice in the areas of research design; evaluation; assessment; strategy development; and in the implementation of the various educational initiatives in which the Deanery is involved.

Typically, we work with a Dean or the Dean Director to support a working group taking action in a particular area. Where appropriate, we will source specialist expertise from external sources, to assist in Deanery projects. Our aim is to provide an expert source of reference against which initiatives can be analyses and tested, to inform the various stages of their development.

We find it especially helpful to be involved at the ground-floor of new ventures since we feel that it is at the stage of needs analysis, and identifying the variety of approaches available, that we can make a particularly strong contribution.

Examples of areas in which we have given internal advice are:

  • GP Trainer Training
  • Mentoring for Dentistry
  • Appraisal for Clinical Tutors
  • Assessment for Specialist Registrars
  • Multiprofessional clinical placements
  • Dignity in the Workplace
