Training in Intensive Care Medicine- general information

Training in Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) must be undertaken alongside a primary specialty of Anaesthesia, Medicine, Emergency Medicine or Surgery. The overall duration of the training programme may need to be extended (CCT date pushed back) depending upon how much of the ICM training may be double counted as training in the baseline specialty.

Trainees must hold a national training number (NTN) and be in years ST3-5 of the baseline specialty to be eligible to apply for the ICM training programme.

Full details of the requirements for training in ICM are available to download from the Intercollegiate Board for Training in Intensive Care Medicine (IBTICM) at www.ibticm.org. Trainees are advised to read these before applying for the posts.

Training in the ‘Complementary Modules’ of Anaesthesia and Medicine is available for those trainees who require them.

All training must be undertaken in posts approved for training by the General Medical Council (GMC). Up-to six months of training at advanced level may be undertaken overseas provided that it is prospectively approved by the GMC.

If you are interested in a career in Intensive Care Medicine you should register with the IBTICM using the ‘General Registration form’ on the IBTICM website.
