Dental Research with Primary Care Research Network South East
Are you interested in participating in dental research and adding to the evidence base for general dental practice?
In order to be relevant to general dental practice, research on preventive care and new treatments needs to be carried out in real life settings and Primary Care Research Network South East would like to partner with GDPs to bring such studies to this region.
They are currently looking for practices to consider participation in FICTION.
FICTION is a multi-centre trial funded by the National Institute of Health Research’s Health Technology Assessment Programme and being led by the University of Dundee. It will address the question “What is the clinical and cost effectiveness of filling caries in primary teeth”, by comparison of three different treatments: surgical management, biological management or prevention advice alone. GDPs who see significant numbers of children with caries are being asked to participate in the study which will involve:
- screening children aged 3-7 years to identify those with caries
- where parents give consent (and children give assent), randomly allocating these children to one of the three treatments
- following these children up annually (or at any extra visits) for pain or sepsis for three years
The trial is expected to get underway in late spring 2012.
