Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP)
The Annual Review of Competence (ARCP) replaces the old 'RITA' process and is a mechanism of recording the review of a trainee's progression through their training programme. Within KSS, our aim is for doctors and dentists in training to be safe, to develop the habits of ‘life-long’ learning and to achieve appropriate standards of practice. By regulating the progress of doctors in training, the ARCP process protects patients and directs the training process.
The ARCP dates for 2012 is to be confirmed.
ARCP's main purpose is:
· To review training to date, particularly since the previous ARCP,
· To ensure that the future training will be of maximum benefit,
· To identify any deficits in knowledge and skills,
· To ensure that all requirements can be satisfied before completion of training programme,
· To know that career plans are realistic.
This ARCP will take place centrally at the Deanery and will be undertaken by members of the Specialty Training Committee including the Head of School, Training Programme Directors, and Educational Supervisors. Once the ARCP’s have been completed 10% of outcomes are reviewed by a Lay and external representative. This is to ensure all ARCP outcomes and processes are fair and equitable. You will then be issued with a yearly Outcome which should reflect your successful completion of each year of training.
If you obtain an unsatisfactory outcome, you will be required to attend a progression meeting with the Head of School and TPD’s to discuss your training and failure to meet the required competencies. You may be granted an extension to undertake more work place based assessments however this is only under exceptional circumstances, and it is the responsibility of each trainee to complete all of the required assessment prior to the review date.
ARCP outcomes will be issued and sent via the Postgraduate Centers for signing by the trainee. Returned copies of the outcome forms will then be sent to the JCST.
