Job Description for Associate Specialist & Staff Grade TUTOR

  • Accountable to: Director of Postgraduate Medical Education

  • Reports to: Director of Postgraduate Medical Education (DME)

Job Purpose

The post-holder will provide

  • support and guidance to Associate Specialist and Staff Grade (SAS) doctors in the Trust, in collaboration with their Lead Clinicians and the Director of Medical Education (DME)

  • leadership in both the professional development of SAS doctors and the contribution of SAS doctors to education and training of trainees in relevant specialties.

SAS doctors in all specialties have individual development plans agreed with their Lead Clinician and all of whom have common as well as specialty specific development needs. Most SAS doctors contribute to the specialty training of trainees within their discipline and many contribute to the core training of Foundation trainees. These are areas where development of further skills as a trainer may be of value. Some also have managerial responsibilities and development needs in this area.

Key Responsibilities

  1. To provide support to SAS doctors in relation to their development needs where required.

    1. To provide each SAS doctor with at least one opportunity per annum to review their experience, developmental objectives and needs and where necessary provide or engage appropriate further support.

    2. To identify SAS doctors who require further support to obtain their development needs and ensure that appropriate support is provided in collaboration as necessary with the DME and Deanery agencies.

  2. To identify specialties where SAS development requires improvement.

    1. Using the SAS doctor feedback to identify specialties within the Trust where more structured development for SAS doctors is required.

    2. Work with the DME, Lead Clinicians and HR Department to assist specialties to address areas that require improvement.

  3. To assist the DME in providing a quality assessment of the Trust support of SAS doctor development by developing and providing a SAS doctor-centered perspective.

    1. Provide structured feedback from SAS doctors on the strengths and weaknesses of the RUH support for development.

    2. Contribute this feedback and other relevant information to the QA report for Severn Deanery and to PMETB and GMC reports.

  4. To work with other members of the educational team to support the development of Educational and Clinical Supervisors within specialties.

    1. Where necessary assist in identifying and delivering the developmental requirements of educational and clinical supervisors for their role as educators and assessors.

  5. To assist SAS doctors to identify and support the needs of trainees who might otherwise become ‘trainees in difficulty’

    1. To support SAS doctors if they feel that a trainee may be in difficulty and to ensure that this trainee is identified to the appropriate members of the educational team, namely the Clinical Supervisor, Training Tutor and DME.

  6. To develop an on-going programme of the developmental needs of SAS doctors in common areas such as training responsibilities and managerial responsibilities.

Personal Development

Develop an appropriate education PDP to be discussed and approved at annual appraisal.

Tenure: Normally 3 years, subject to annual appraisal and review by the Director of Medical Education. Job descriptions will be reviewed annually.

Remuneration: Funds are available to remunerate the post holder or their clinical department dependent on local circumstances (suggested the equivalent of 1 PA).

The Postgraduate Centre has a team of experienced administrators whose role is to provide administrative support to Clinical Tutors.
