The Role of STEAG
Specialty Training:the Specialty Training & Education Advisory Group
KSS Deanery convenes the Specialty Training and Education Advisory Group (STEAG) in order tosupport and enhance the work of all specialty schools and associated committees in KSS Deanery and to solve problems and advise on matters relating to specialty training and education.
The group meets every second month and is chaired by the Deputy Postgraduate Dean for Secondary Care. Its terms of reference are to:
- provide an advisory forum for issues generic to the specialty schools in KSS Deanery;
- accept and update the operational guides for the schools, including inclusion of mandatory quality management/quality control issues which go to the Quality Management Steering Group;
- ensure high quality liaison with LEPs, their LABs and LFGs, and enhance Contract Review;
- ensure delivery of curricula in liaison with Royal Colleges/Specialty Advisory Committees/Faculties;
- respond to all ‘Gold Guide’ issues, e.g.
- Recruitment and selection into the specialty school programmes/posts
- Managing Specialty programmes
- Placement of trainees in appropriate posts
- Management of and support for trainees with special circumstances, those who are training flexibly (LTFT), and OOP issues
- Ensuring that Workplace Based Assessments take place
- Undertaking regular reviews of assessments (ARCP)
- Recording progress;
- identify problems and signpost remedial support when necessary;
- assist the supply of necessary documents to allow trainees to obtain appropriate programme outcomes and CCTs;
- enable IT to support the processes above and co-ordinate the training for web-based e-Learning functions;
- direct items to appropriate standing committees, e.g. Trainee Support Group/Trainees in Difficulty;
- liaise with London and other deanery schools, both foundation and specialty;
- ‘brand’ and raise the academic/educational profile of the schools;
- foster organisational/team learning and education at LEP and KSS Deanery level;
- ensure a smooth relationship between educational and service imperatives;
- plan development events.
